In the middle of the debate about stricter capital requirements for the major Swiss bank, it comes through: Sergio Ermotti is planning to resign as UBS boss in 2027.

This is reported by the Financial Times citing insiders. Ermotti resigned from UBS’s position as CEO for the first time in 2020, after leading the Swiss bank since 2011. In the wake of Credit Suisse’s demise and its takeover by UBS, he took over the chairmanship of the major bank again following the intervention of Chairman of the Board of Directors Colm Kelleher. After the integration has been completed, the Ticino resident now obviously wants to call it quits.

UBS is currently the focus of Swiss politics because the Federal Council wants to tighten the regulations for the bank, including with regard to equity. This is intended to reduce the cluster risk that exists for Switzerland due to the size of UBS after the CS takeover.

UBS defends itself against strict regulations and argues, among other things, that it will be less competitive in the event of restrictions. The issue was recently discussed in Parliament during a consultation and it became clear that most parties were in favor of “soft” regulation of UBS.

More about it here:

According to the Financial Times, there is likely to be a close race to succeed Ermotti. Iqbal Khan, Bea Martin, Robert Karofsky and Aleksandar Ivanovic are considered favorites.

Iqbal Khan is best known to the general public through his feud with Tidjane Thiam during her time at Credit Suisse. In addition to Khan, the second Swiss among the successor candidates mentioned is Aleksandar Ivanovic, who is currently head of asset management at UBS.

Iqbal Khan used to work for Credit Suisse.

According to the Times, the exact timetable for Ermotti’s resignation has not yet been finalized and could therefore change. Ermotti first spoke about a possible resignation in 2024. (con)
