In April 2025, Dane announced that he had the incurable nerve disease ALS. He was 53 years old.
According to Netflix, the conversation with Dane was recorded in November with the agreement to air it after his death. The actor sits in a wheelchair and speaks about his life in a hoarse voice. He addresses moving words to his daughters Billie (15) and Georgia (14) from his marriage to actress Rebecca Gayheart. Dane remembers vacations and experiences together and shares wisdom that he learned through the illness.
Farewell words to the daughters
The two teenage girls should live “in the now” and enjoy every moment, their father advises them. They should discover their love for something that awakens their passion and brings joy. For him it was acting. Dane further emphasizes how important real friends are. The last piece of advice he gives his daughters is to fight until “the last breath” and never give up. ALS slowly destroyed his body, but never his mind. «Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are everything to me. Good night. I love you. These are my last words.”
The disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) affects the central and peripheral nervous system. This causes nerves to be destroyed, causing problems with swallowing, breathing and speaking, muscle loss and paralysis, which ultimately leads to death. (sda/dpa)
