European Democracy Shield: tackling foreign interference online
With an oral question to Democracy Commissioner Michael McGrath, MEPs are set to demand an investigation into whether major online platforms’ ‘recommender systems’ are undermining democracy and violating EU digital rules. Recent elections have shown how these systems can amplify disinformation and foreign propaganda, potentially skewing civic discourse and electoral outcomes. The debate starts at around 10.00.

Ensuring rule of law breaches do not endanger the EU budget Following their debate yesterday, MEPs will vote at noon on a draft report assessing nearly five years of implementation of the rule of law conditionality mechanism. The system was designed to ensure rule of law breaches do not endanger the EU budget. Among other proposals, MEPs want it to be easier to activate the mechanism. They also want more transparency and improved protection for the final beneficiaries of EU funding.
