In the negotiations with the USA in the Greenland conflict, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen believes in an agreement that does not violate the territorial integrity and self-determination of the Arctic island. After repeated threats from US President Donald Trump to annex the island, the US, Denmark and Greenland began diplomatic talks about the future of the country a few weeks ago.
“We made it clear from the start that any solution must respect our red lines,” said Lars Løkke Rasmussen at a press conference in the Greenland capital Nuuk. «Nevertheless, we started discussions. I see this as a clear sign that it is possible to find a solution that respects our red lines.”
After the first meeting, Greenland is “not yet where we want to be,” said Greenland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt. “It’s a long road, so it’s too early to say where we’ll end.”
Motzfeldt and Rasmussen met with their Canadian counterpart Anita Anand in Nuuk on Saturday. According to the TV station DR, Canada had previously opened a consulate in Greenland on Friday – like France. On Saturday, Rasmussen called the new Canadian consulate a “new beginning” and a “good opportunity to strengthen our existing cooperation.” (sda/dpa)
