A South Korean special investigation team has called for the death penalty for former President Yoon Suk Yeol. According to special investigators’ arguments, the 65-year-old, who unexpectedly declared martial law in December 2024, was guilty of rioting, South Korea’s official Yonhap news agency reported.

According to media reports, a verdict against Yoon is expected at the end of the month or early February. Although the death penalty continues to be imposed in South Korea, it has not been carried out in almost 30 years.
Since the summer, South Korea has been ruled by President Lee Jae Myung, a left-centrist politician and Yoon’s long-time political rival. (sda/dpa)
