After the publication of extensive contacts between Mette-Marit and the convicted US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the pressure on the Norwegian Crown Princess continues to increase. New surveys suggest that a large proportion of the population has doubts about her future role as queen.
The Norwegian newspaper “Nettavisen” had the market research institute “InFact” conduct a survey on the topic at the beginning of March. There, 46.2 percent of those surveyed said they were against Mette-Marit becoming queen. 24.3 percent were undecided, 29.5 percent continued to support them.
Vegard Jarness, sociologist and head of the analysis department at “InFact”, sees a connection between the current results and the recent controversies surrounding the Crown Princess. «These figures must be seen in the context of the Epstein case and the criminal proceedings against her son Marius Borg Høiby. The negative assessment of her handling of the controversial cases may have influenced the public’s attitude towards her future role.”
“Comprehensive trust problem”
In another survey conducted by the institute, many Norwegians also expressed criticism of the Crown Princess’s handling of the Epstein affair. 62 percent rated their behavior as bad or very bad, nine percent gave a positive assessment. 13.2 percent said they were undecided. According to Jarness, this shows clear skepticism among the population. As a result, the Crown Princess has “a comprehensive trust problem” in the current situation. Nobility expert Tove Taalesen from “Nettavisen” said: “I’m starting to doubt whether it can still be saved. The numbers show that the Norwegian people will not be deceived.”
A survey by the Norwegian newspaper “VG” at the end of February 2026 had already shown that a large part of the Norwegian population spoke out against Mette-Marit. 47.1 percent of the 1,068 people surveyed did not want her to take over the crown in the future. On the other hand, 29.4 percent supported her and 22.6 percent were undecided.
