The Croatian Boris Vujcic will be the new Vice President of the European Central Bank (ECB). The EU heads of state and government finally decided this at a summit in Brussels.

The 61-year-old is scheduled to take up the post on June 1st for eight years. The finance ministers of the countries with the euro common currency had previously spoken out in favor of Vujcic. The post is vacant because the current deputy head of the ECB, the Spaniard Luis de Guindos, is scheduled to leave office at the end of May.
Vujcic has currently headed Croatia’s central bank. The successor to de Guindos is not the only top position at the ECB that has recently been in focus. ECB President Christine Lagarde’s term of office ends in October 2027. There is already speculation about the Frenchwoman’s successor – also because there were reports of Lagarde’s early departure. Two Germans, Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel and ECB Director Isabel Schnabel, have already thrown their hats into the ring.
When filling positions, negotiators usually keep in mind that there is a balance between small and large, southern and northern euro countries. This also applies to the relationship between supporters of a hard monetary policy and advocates of a more loose course. (dab/sda/dpa)
