Colombian authorities have seized one of the largest cocaine shipments in recent years. “In one of the most powerful operations in recent years, we seized four tons of cocaine,” said the head of the anti-drug police, William Castaño Ramos, via the X platform.
The drugs were discovered in a port in the Urabá region in the northwest of the country. They were hidden in more than 334 boxes of snacks and were supposed to be shipped to the United Kingdom, according to police.
In total, investigators found more than 4,000 packages, each containing around a kilogram of cocaine. According to official information, this prevented the distribution of more than ten million doses and prevented criminal proceeds of around $155 million.
Largest seizure in over five years
The police said there had not been a seizure of this size for more than five years. The authorities see this as a significant blow to the criminal structures involved. Different markings on the drug packages suggest that multiple networks may have been involved in the transport.
Colombia is considered the world’s largest producer of cocaine. Large quantities of the drug are transported via neighboring countries such as Ecuador or via sea routes to North America and Europe. (sda/dpa)
