A snowy New York actually looks nice, but there – as in other parts of the northeast of the USA – there is currently a state of emergency. Around 40 million people are affected by this.
In New York, hundreds of schools as well as libraries and Broadway will remain closed today, Monday, February 23, 2026. New Yorkers are urged to stay at home. Highways, bridges and streets are closed to traffic. Food is also not delivered. Some school buildings will remain open to allow people to warm up.
More than 8,000 flights have already been canceled due to the snowstorm. Up to 60 cm of snow is expected. There are also strong winds, which is why the blizzard warning was issued. Loud BBC 200,000 households and businesses are without electricity.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill called on the population to stock up on food and water and to adhere to the ban on traffic on the roads.
A North American blizzard occurs when wind speeds of 55 kilometers per hour or more are measured, large amounts of snow fall and visibility is less than 400 meters and the storm lasts at least three hours.
Already at the end of January there was extreme cold and heavy snowfall in parts of the USA. 85 people lost their lives.
