After two dead newborns were found in a freezer in a small French community, their mother is in custody, according to media reports.
The public prosecutor’s office announced that an investigation had been initiated against her for the killing of minors. The two frozen babies were found on Tuesday in the woman’s home in Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont, which is between Strasbourg and Dijon.
According to French media reports, the 50-year-old admitted that she gave birth to the children at home. She was therefore previously arrested near Paris. The woman hid the pregnancies, it was said, citing the public prosecutor. Accordingly, she explained that she had wrapped the babies “immediately after birth” and put them in the freezer in the utility room. She used the room alone.
The mother, who reportedly has nine other children, gave a period between 2011 – the year her previous child was born – and 2018. According to media, a family member discovered the bodies after the woman left the house in December. It initially remained unclear exactly when the infants were frozen. The woman has not yet been convicted, it was said. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact time and circumstances of death. (hkl/sda/dpa)
