One died shortly afterwards. Another skier had to be taken by helicopter to the hospital in Turin in critical condition. A search is underway for further possible victims.

Media reports reported that up to six skiers were buried. According to initial information, the avalanche broke out around 11 a.m. in the morning. The skiers were off the groomed pistes above the town of Courmayeur in a side valley. According to the mountain rescue service, the victims probably come from France.
