An “abnormal” amount of the toxin cereulide was found in baby milk that a baby who died in Angers, France, drank in December. The family’s lawyers announced this on Friday. However, a connection with the death has not yet been proven.

The infant had consumed Nestlé’s Guigoz brand milk “in the hours before his sudden death,” the lawyers said. They confirmed a report in the newspaper “Courrier de l’Ouest”. Although a “radically abnormal” cereulide content was found in the batch examined, it still needs to be clarified whether this medically explains the death.
The Angers public prosecutor’s office has been investigating since December the cause of death of the 27-day-old girl, who died on December 23 in her mother’s home. In January, the mother pointed out a can of Guigoz milk that was one of the recalled batches.
Since mid-December, there has been a worldwide wave of recalls of baby milk due to possible cereulide contamination. Three deaths and around ten hospitalizations were reported in France. However, there is currently no clear causal connection. (hkl/sda/awp/afp)
