Due to heavy rain and the acute risk of landslides, all 380,000 residents of the Japanese city of Nagasaki should seek safety. The authorities issued the second highest warning level for the entire city in the south of the country, as the Japanese television station NHK reported early this morning (local time). Residents are asked to avoid endangered areas.
Japan’s meteorological agency predicted heavy rain for other areas of the southwestern main island of Kyushu and warned of rivers overflowing and possible flooding in low-lying areas. There is an increased risk in the prefectures of Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki and Kumamoto. Heavy rain was also warned for the smallest main island of Shikoku. Meanwhile, two typhoons, or tropical cyclones, formed south of Japan.
As a result of global warming, Japan is recording more and more heavy rainfall, which means that landslides are occurring more and more frequently in the mountainous island kingdom. (sda/dpa)
