US President Donald Trump has ordered the American government to accelerate the development of quantum computers and their use. The Energy Ministry should get a quantum computer that is powerful enough for research activities.
The target for this is 2028, announced Trump confidant Michael Kratsios, who is responsible for science and technology policy at the White House.
No date was specified in the decree itself. At the same time, it says that several US authorities – including the space agency NASA – should develop five-year plans for the use of quantum technology.
Hope for drastically higher computer performance
Quantum computers are expected to be many times more powerful than today’s computers and pave the way to new scientific breakthroughs – at least that’s the hope. At the same time, there is concern that the new technology could easily crack encryption technology, which is still considered secure today.
That’s why tech companies like Apple and Google have been introducing new encryption technologies for years that are intended to withstand the potential danger posed by quantum computers. Trump also ordered further protection of the US infrastructure against attacks using quantum technology. Energy suppliers and water companies, among others, should be protected with priority.
So far, powerful quantum computers are still in development. As a leading player in the field, Google hopes to build practical quantum computers by the end of the decade. (sda/dpa)
