Two passenger trains collided near the English town of Bedford on Friday evening. According to initial information, several passengers were injured. The rescue workers deployed a large contingent, including several rescue helicopters. Rail traffic in the region was stopped.
The accident occurred around 5:15 p.m. local time, around three kilometers south of Bedford. According to previous findings, an intercity train was standing at a red signal when another train hit it from behind. It is still unclear why the collision occurred. Among other things, the authorities are investigating whether a train ran through a stop signal.
Videos from the scene of the accident show badly damaged wagons, some of which derailed. Further photos from inside the trains show injured passengers lying on the floor covered in blood. Eyewitnesses report that the impact occurred without any warning. Neither warning signals sounded nor did the train noticeably slow down.
The two affected trains were traveling from Nottingham and Corby respectively towards London St. Pancras. The accident largely paralyzed rail traffic between London and Leicester. British Transport Minister Heidi Alexander was dismayed and thanked the rescue workers for their efforts. The investigation into the cause is ongoing.
