A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the southwest of the Greek Peloponnese peninsula on Sunday evening.

According to further information from the Geodynamic Institute of the University of Athens, the earthquake occurred at 8:17 p.m. CEST (9:17 p.m. local time).

The center of the quake was around nine kilometers below the seabed, about 16 kilometers off the coast of the small town of Methoni. “So far we have not recorded any damage. “However, the quake was clearly felt,” the region’s mayor, Panagiotis Karvelas, told Greek radio. The shock was also felt in western Crete, Greek media reported.
Seismologist Wasilis Karastathis explained on Greek television that it is currently impossible to say whether this was already the main earthquake. This would initially take a few days. There have been significantly stronger earthquakes in the region in the past. An all-clear cannot therefore be given. (sda/dpa)
