The 70-year-old Swiss was found in a hospital in Formia in the province of Latina, the Italian news agency Ansa reported on Thursday. He was being treated there for health reasons. The preliminary arrest took place on the basis of an extradition arrest warrant from the Swiss authorities.
The Swiss justice system accuses the man of embezzlement and fraud. In his role as head of a cantonal office, he is said to have appropriated almost 500,000 francs. To do this, he forged documents.
Extradition proceedings initiated
After identifying the man, the police informed the responsible court in Rome. This ordered the man to be arrested immediately and guarded in the hospital. In a next step, the responsible judicial authority confirmed the provisional extradition arrest warrant.
The 70-year-old was then transferred to Cassino prison. There he will be available to the judicial authorities for further extradition proceedings. (dab/sda/ans)
