The rescue operation for humpback whale Timmy ended in chaos. It is currently unclear how long the whale lived after its release. That could change now.

The Ministry of the Environment in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania says it has evaluated transmitter data from the humpback whale known as Timmy. These will be presented to the public on Friday morning, as the ministry announced. The transmitter was attached to the animal shortly before it was released in early May.

“The data provides the first look at the whale’s movements after its release on May 2, 2026 and provides important insights for the overall assessment of the case,” said the ministry. The focus is on “evaluating the location data from the satellite transmitter, the movements of the whale after its release and the classification of the available research results.”
Humpback whale Timmy: Dead animal washed up off Anholt
The humpback whale, which was stranded several times, lay off the Baltic Sea island of Poel for weeks in April. After long discussions, the ministry, contrary to the advice of scientists, tolerated the rescue attempt by a private initiative. The group brought the weakened animal towards on a barge North Sea.
