Although the inflation rate in the USA accelerated sharply in May, the US President remains positive. He speaks of “great numbers”.

US inflation rose to 4.2 percent in May in light of the Iran war. This means that prices rose faster than they have in the past three years. For consumers and companies, in other words, everything has become even more expensive. The Iran war, which caused energy prices to rise, is also to blame.
However, bad news for consumers is apparently good news for the US President. As US media report, Donald Trump responded to a journalist’s question about whether the increase worried him with the words: “I love it. The numbers were great. I love inflation.”

At the same time, Trump announced that inflation would soon fall. With the end of the Iran War, oil prices would fall back to the level at which they had previously been. Or even deeper. Trump made no further explanations.
However, an end to the Iran war seems anything but close, at least at the moment. The USA launched renewed attacks on Iran on Thursday, whereupon its regime announced that it would completely block the Strait of Hormuz. This would in turn mean that there could be massive bottlenecks in the energy supply and thus price increases.
Opposite the New York Post Trump later said his statements about inflation had been taken out of context. He wanted to say that inflation was much lower than expected. Or to put it another way: He loves the fact that inflation is not higher.
But Trump’s statement wasn’t particularly well received by politicians either. Many of his opponents make fun of him on social media. Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer wrote on X: “Trump actually said he loves inflation. In front of the camera. So all America can hear it. His contempt for you knows no bounds.”
Senator Bernie Sanders also commented on Trump’s statement: “You know who doesn’t love inflation, Mr. President? Working families who can no longer afford fuel, food and other everyday necessities because of your disastrous actions.”
Candidate Trump: “I will end inflation on Day One.”

Democratic US Representative Diana DeGette also has harsh words: “Donald Trump never did his own shopping or filled his own tank. Of course he loves inflation.”
It remains to be seen whether the situation for average US citizens will worsen in the coming months. Everyone – including Trump – is now eagerly awaiting the next interest rate decision. The new Fed chief Kevin Warsh was actually considered Trump’s preferred candidate after the US President cut his teeth on his predecessor Jerome Powell. In most cases, Powell refrained from cutting interest rates despite pressure from the White House. The same approach is now expected for the June decision. However, the new head of the central bank could already annoy the US President. (front)
