Donald Trump’s announcements about the Iran war continue to lose credibility.Image: keystone
The American armed forces carried out retaliatory strikes against Iranian military installations on Wednesday night. Iran probably responded with attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait. The situation in the Persian Gulf is threatening to escalate again.

CNN counted. Donald Trump is said to have announced 38 times in the past few weeks that an end to the Iran war was imminent. And a fully negotiated peace agreement could be signed.
More about this:
But the American president’s supporters are increasingly finding it difficult to believe these assurances. “We’ve been hearing this for a long time now,” said “Fox News” host Jesse Watters on Tuesday, usually a Trump ally. He can no longer judge what is behind the president’s announcements.
The reason for these skeptical words: A new wave of military strikes in Iran – less than 24 hours after the President once again announced on Tuesday night that “a deal” would soon be available. American forces attacked military installations near the Strait of Hormuz in several waves and destroyed Iranian naval bases and artillery batteries at five locations, according to the New York Times.
The current developments in the ticker:
This was a “proportional and limited” retaliatory strike after the Iranians had shot down an American Apache helicopter with a drone hours earlier. The US armed forces managed to rescue the two crew members – with the help of an unmanned Saronic Corsair watercraft.
The Iranian foreign minister threatens the USA
However, Trump immediately announced revenge for the Iranian actions. “It is very important to react,” the president told an ABC television correspondent. He has always been an advocate of the motto that the response to such attacks must be “decisive”.
But almost in the same breath, Trump also said:
“We have a deal that is very good.”
It sounded as if peace in the Middle East was within reach. War and peace, how do they go together? An anonymous presidential aide said both could be true. The president wanted to make it clear to the Iranians that the USA would not tolerate any further attacks. So he authorized a retaliatory strike. At the same time, talks about ending the war with Tehran continued. And a breakthrough is possible at any time.
The Iranians, however, were just as skeptical as the “Fox News” commentator. In any case, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on X: “Our powerful armed forces will not leave any attack unanswered.” This threat was directed not only against US forces, but also against American allies in the region. In fact, there were attacks in both Kuwait and Bahrain on Wednesday night (Swiss time).
So, more than three months after the start of the war, a peace solution still seems to be a long way off. (aargauerzeitung.ch)
