As the BBC Reportedly, the attacks hit two residential buildings in the southern suburb of Dahieh, a stronghold of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia. The Lebanese news agency reported two deaths and at least 17 injured.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack targeted Hezbollah’s “terrorist headquarters.” The attack was a response to rocket fire from Lebanon into Israeli territory. Hezbollah initially did not comment on the allegations.
Concern for a ceasefire
The attacks are seen as a setback for US-mediated efforts to calm the situation. Washington had recently urged Israel to limit attacks on Beirut in order not to endanger ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region.
Videos on social media show damaged homes, rubble on the streets and people rushing to help the injured. An Israeli army spokesman also announced further attacks against Hezbollah’s infrastructure on X.
Ceasefire violated several times
There has been a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon since April 17th. However, both sides regularly accuse each other of violating the agreement.
According to the BBC, this is the third Israeli attack on the Lebanese capital since the ceasefire came into force. The two previous attacks were directed against Hezbollah commanders.
Tensions remain high. A spokesman for the Iranian parliament announced a “decisive and painful response” after the attack. (mke)
