The Catholic bishop of Quelimane in Mozambique, Osório Citora Afonso, was found shot dead in his home on Saturday, as Kathpress reported in the evening. According to national media reports, the police are investigating murder.
After studying in Kinshasa, Rome and Jerusalem, the 54-year-old cleric and religious worked at the papal embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo and as head of a mission center in northern Italy. He then worked at the missionary authority in the Vatican. He has been bishop since 2023.
Quelimane’s diocesan leadership was given to Afonso in July 2025 by Pope Leo XIV, who also appointed him administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira last April. Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo said he was shocked by the incident. (sda/apa)
