A woman made an eye-catching discovery while cleaning out her garage in Los Angeles. She found 20 sticks of explosive dynamite in an old freezer, as the Los Angeles Times reports. The result was a major police operation.
The woman apparently had no idea that the explosives were in her property. The police sent a bomb disposal team, which spent several hours at the scene, according to the report. Residents near the house in the Valley Glen neighborhood were asked to leave their homes.
It is unclear where the sticks of dynamite came from. The police have started investigations. In California, only blasters and companies that have the appropriate permits are allowed to possess dynamite.
Similar incident last summer
As police spokesman Warner Castillo told the Los Angeles Times, the bomb defusers dipped the explosives in diesel to render them harmless. The fuel stabilized the nitroglycerin contained in the rods. Only then could the poles be safely transported away.
According to police, an explosion could have caused major damage to the area. Castillo praised the finder for immediately alerting the police.
Last summer, three LA County Sheriff’s Department officers were killed when a grenade exploded at a training facility near East Los Angeles. The explosive device was one of two removed from the garage of a Santa Monica apartment in July after being discovered by a tenant.
