A mountain guide who was missing for six days on Mount Everest and thought to be dead has resurfaced. Veteran Sherpa Hillary Dawa was found alive near the base camp, where he returned on his own, officials said Thursday.

“He crawled down the mountain,” said Pemba Sherpa, head of tour operator 8K Expeditions, who coordinated the rescue effort. A helicopter took him to a hospital.
The missing man was found by the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) near the base camp on Thursday morning. The Nepalese team helps with route guidance on the mountain and clears up any trash left behind.
The British mountaineer Chris Thrall had previously declared that he had successfully climbed the summit on May 29th together with the Sherpa. On Wednesday he published a video message on Instagram in which he announced the mountain guide’s death.
In the video, he described leaving the Sherpa on the mountain after the Sherpa asked him to go ahead. Rescue teams then started looking for the mountain guide.
The climb was one of the last of the season in which, according to initial estimates by Nepalese authorities, more than 1,000 climbers reached the summit of Everest. At least five people – two Indian and three Nepalese climbers – have died this season. (dab/sda/apa/afp)
