Two teenagers say they killed an eleven-year-old in Rennes, western France, in a dispute over fishing bait. The 16-year-old and the 15-year-old confessed in police custody to having strangled the boy in a dispute over the bait worth a few dozen euros, according to public prosecutor Frédéric Teillet in Rennes.
During the interrogation, they stated that they had killed the boy “out of revenge”. The boy was discovered lifeless on the banks of a river in the town in Brittany on Sunday with a wet bath towel tied very tightly around his neck.
According to the young people’s statements, they met the eleven-year-old while fishing on Saturday and arranged to meet again on Sunday. On Sunday they decided to take several fishing lures from the boy that he is said to have stolen from them.
However, the eleven-year-old told his parents on Saturday that the 16-year-old had given him the fishing lures. After the violence, the young people took the boy’s fishing material to their home, where the police discovered it during a search.
The two confessed young people, who have not yet appeared before the police, should be brought before the judge, said the public prosecutor. The investigation is currently underway for the intentional killing of a minor. (sda/dpa)
