The executions were carried out after the Supreme Court confirmed the death sentences. It was not known which protests the verdicts referred to.
The executions come during a wave of executions in Iran. Many death sentences are currently being carried out following the mass protests in January, which the country’s leadership brutally repressed, and in connection with espionage allegations.
The human rights organization Amnesty International reported at least 2,159 executions in Iran last year – a new high since 1981. In the Islamic Republic, the death penalty is used to politically suppress and intimidate the population, the organization wrote in a report at the beginning of the week. (dab/sda/dpa)
