According to US media research, the attackers at an Islamic center in San Diego, California, broadcast their crime live on the Internet. Shortly after the fatal attack on Monday, a video appeared online that the perpetrators apparently recorded themselves, as CNN and the New York Times reported.

The video available to the media shows, among other things, how the perpetrators gain access to the entrance area of the mosque with rifles and at least one pistol. It also shows an alleged victim in a pool of blood. Later, one of the two men in a car can be seen shooting first at the passenger and then at his own head.

Nazi symbols can be seen on the weapons

The weapons seen in the video have handwritten white labels and symbols. These included numeric codes and abbreviations that referenced Nazism and previous acts of violence, CNN reported. The investigating authorities have not yet officially confirmed the authenticity of the video. However, CNN reported, citing an anonymous source from investigative circles, that the video was classified as real.

The investigators also did not initially confirm the authenticity of a 75-page document that was reportedly also circulating on the Internet. In addition to Nazi and neo-Nazi symbols, the writing also contains references to an attack in 2019 on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. At that time, 51 people were killed.

Police: Fatalities saved many lives

Three people, including a security guard, were killed on Monday in the attack on the Islamic center, which includes a mosque and a school with small children. According to police, all three fatalities prevented the attackers from getting into the facility with around 140 children. The two 17- and 18-year-old suspects were found dead in a car a short time later – presumably from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. According to investigators, the police found anti-Islamic documents in the vehicle. (nil/sda/dpa)
