A British man has died after plunging 400ft from a popular tourist viewing spot in Spain, according to local reports.
The 38-year-old was found by a passer-by on the Paseo Nuevo coastal walkway in San Sebastian at around 11am on Friday, having fallen from the Mount Urgull area, Basque newspaper El Diario Vasco reported.
Emergency services were called but the unnamed man is said to have died at the scene. A ladder was reportedly deployed from a truck in order for authorities to access the body.
The incident is now under investigation by the Basque police Ertzaintza.
“We saw this morning that there were Ertzaintza cars and traffic officers, and the road was blocked near the Photography Society,” said a worker at the Zazpi restaurant, located in the San Telmo Museum, according to El Diario Vasco.
The body has been taken to the Basque Institute of Legal Medicine to undergo an autopsy. The Independent has contacted the Ertzaintza for comment.
The location, next to a large Basque flag overlooking the Salamanca promenade and Zuloaga square, is a popular viewing spot and tourist destination. The Paseo Nuevo is a popular trail for climbers aiming to scale the nearby mountain.
This is not the first time someone has fallen to their death at the much-visited beauty spot. A 65-year-old woman died in similar circumstances at Mount Urgull in 2019.
A number of Britons have also died in fatal falls in other parts of Spain in recent years. Two Scottish men, 26-year-old Evan Thomson and 19-year-old Gary Kelly, fell to their death from their balconies in separate and unrelated incidents at the same hotel, the Ibiza Rocks, in 2025.
Mr Thomson fell from the sixth floor of the building while Mr Kelly from the third floor two weeks later.
