The Swiss embassy in London was built in 1971 – it is now to be extensively renovated at a cost of 96 million francs. The embassy in Great Britain is one of Switzerland’s most important representations in the world, emphasizes the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA).
The fact that both the land and the building in the London district of Marylebone are owned by the Swiss Confederation is unusual in the British capital.
The embassy currently houses the office, the residence, an official apartment, four smaller residential units and representative rooms, writes the View. In the meantime, the building shell, the building services and the interior are in need of renovation.
As part of the renovation, the premises will also be adapted. The renovation will enable two additional Swiss official apartments in London as well as the Swiss Tourism representation, which was previously rented elsewhere, to be accommodated in the embassy building. Work processes should also be improved.
The EDA emphasizes that the renovation option is the most economical and sustainable solution. Alternatives such as selling the existing building or renting a new embassy were also examined. (hkl)
