According to his official breeding documents, a papillon named “Lazare” is over 30 years old and could therefore break the previous world record for the oldest dog.

The previous record holder, the Australian cattle dog “Bluey”, was 29 years and 5 months old. If the information in “Lazare’s” French stud book turns out to be correct, the little Papillon would be the oldest dog ever documented in the world. The authenticity of the papers is currently being checked.
Despite his age, “Lazare” is in surprisingly good condition according to veterinary reports. He suffers from osteoarthritis, visual impairment and increasing hearing loss – all typical signs of aging. His general health is still rated as good by the veterinarians.
Re-adopted after the death of his owner
Shortly after the death of his long-time owner, “Lazare” came to the animal shelter, where he became a minor sensation for the employees. Dogs that were over 20 years old had already been seen there – but never one in their 31st year.
The dog has now been adopted by a new owner who is allowing him to live out his old age. A submission to the Guinness Book of Records is apparently planned. (mke)
