According to the US military, two men were killed in another attack on a boat belonging to suspected drug smugglers in the Eastern Pacific. There was also a survivor in the attack, the Southern Command (Southcom) responsible for the region announced on the online platform X. That’s why the US Coast Guard was called in for rescue measures. There was initially no information as to whether the person had been recovered.
Since last fall, the government of US President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked boats belonging to suspected drug smugglers in the Caribbean and the Pacific. According to the military, more than 100 people have already been killed. Trump’s government cites the fact that drug cartels have been declared terrorist organizations as the legal basis for the attacks. Critics, however, doubt whether the deadly attacks in international waters are permissible under international law.
Reports that two survivors of one of the attacks were killed in a subsequent attack caused a particular stir, even though they were effectively at the mercy of the US military at that point and could no longer escape. (sda/dpa)
