Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar were involved in the draft.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran continues to hold the global economy hostage,” Rubio said in the statement. In order to enable safe shipping passage again, Tehran should disclose the number and locations of sea mines that have been laid and help to remove them. A humanitarian corridor should also be set up. The resolution should be voted on in the coming days.
Plans for a corresponding resolution had already been announced on Monday. The US ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, said when asked whether opposition was expected in the most powerful UN body: “We cannot imagine anyone who contradicts the fact that international waterways cannot be mined or tariffs imposed.” The difference to a previous resolution that failed due to the veto of China and Russia is that there is now a ceasefire and there is no longer a “hot conflict”. Waltz left it open how the demands would be enforced. (sda/dpa)
