According to those close to her, the imprisoned Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been transferred to the intensive care unit because of acute heart problems. Mohammadi’s foundation announced on the X platform that her symptoms worsened after she was admitted to the hospital. She was said to be suffering from persistently unstable blood pressure levels and severe nausea.

The 54-year-old is currently in a hospital in Sanjan in northwestern Iran, where she is also imprisoned. However, according to her foundation, the medical staff there are not sufficiently familiar with her medical history. She urgently needs to be transferred to Tehran for treatment and looked after by her own team of specialists.
Mohammadi’s lawyer, Mostafa Nili, said the activist had been suffering from cardiac arrhythmia for a long time. On Friday she collapsed after severe chest pain and was then taken to the hospital from Sanjan Central Prison.
Family reported weakness and heart attack
Mohammadi’s brother, Hamid-Reza Mohammadi, said in April that her health was worrying. After a heart attack at the end of March, she was severely weakened and had lost a significant amount of weight. The family expressed great concern, particularly due to the inadequate medical care in prison.
Mohammadi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her work against the oppression of women and against the death penalty in Iran, is imprisoned in Sanjan Central Prison. At the beginning of February, according to her lawyer, she was sentenced again to several years in prison for conspiracy and propaganda activities. They are also banned from leaving the country for two years. (sda/dpa)
