After the recent terrorist attack in London, the new Islamist group Ashab al-Jamin claimed responsibility for the attack. The group’s lone fighters attacked and injured two “Zionists” in the Golders Green district, according to a statement that the group distributed today on pro-Iranian channels on the Internet. In a short clip, the group also showed scenes of the attack filmed by surveillance cameras and eyewitnesses.
In the clip, the group also apparently refers to an Israeli law from March that expanded the death penalty. This stipulates that the death penalty can be imposed in the case of terrorist-motivated murder with the aim of destroying the State of Israel. “If the law for executing prisoners is not stopped, you will be executed on the streets,” explains Ashab al-Jamin in the clip.
The opaque group’s full name is Harakat Ashab al-Jamin al-Islamia, also known as HAYI for short. It first appeared during the US and Israel’s war against Iran and, according to investigators, has since claimed responsibility for several attacks in Europe against Jewish and Western institutions. However, it is unclear whether the group actually exists or whether it is a production. At the same time, there are signs of possible connections to the Iranian state.
Two people were injured in the Jewish-dominated Golders Green district of London in the terrorist attack. A suspected attacker was arrested, a 45-year-old man.
“The anti-Semitic attack in Golders Green is deeply appalling. Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Great Britain,” said Prime Minister Starmer. The Labor politician announced that those responsible would be held accountable.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan wrote that the Jewish community in the British capital had been the target of a series of shocking anti-Semitic attacks. “There must be absolutely no place for anti-Semitism in society.” London police have increased their presence in the affected area.
Khan thanked the rescue workers and a neighborhood initiative “for their quick response to this terrible incident.”
Video is said to show arrest
British media reported on unconfirmed videos of the incident circulating on social media. For example, you can see a man lying on his stomach being held in place by several people. In other photos that are supposed to show the alleged crime scene, numerous ambulances and police officers can be seen.
MP Sarah Sackman, whose constituency is Golders Green, also condemned the incident as anti-Semitic in a statement on Platform X: “The attacks on British Jews are an attack on Great Britain itself. It is outrageous that Jews are attacked in this way,” said the Labor MP.
Most recently there was an arson attack in Golders Green
Recently there have been several attacks on Jewish institutions in London, often arson attacks. Just a few weeks ago, around four ambulances from the Jewish emergency service Hatzola in Golders Green were destroyed in an anti-Semitic arson attack. Several suspects have been charged.
The two men injured in the knife attack are being treated by Hatzola, according to the BBC. The organization is run by volunteers and offers free medical transport and emergency assistance. A Jewish neighborhood initiative is also said to have played a key role in the arrest.
Israel calls for more action against anti-Semitism
The Israeli Foreign Ministry has meanwhile called for more decisive action by the UK against anti-Semitism.
“Following attacks on synagogues, Jewish institutions, community ambulances and now targeted attacks on Jews in Golders Green, the British government can no longer claim that the situation is under control,” the ministry said in a post on Platform X.
Jews in Britain should not need security patrols to live openly as Jews, the ministry said. “Enough of the words,” the message said. London must now “act decisively and urgently”. (sda/dpa)
