Before the main course could be served, the gala was stopped after an attempted attack. An armed man ran through a checkpoint outside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton Hotel and was arrested a few meters away after shots were fired. One officer was injured in the incident.
The Journalists’ Association of Correspondents Accredited to the White House has been organizing the traditional gala evening for more than 100 years. Trump attended the event for the first time on Saturday, having previously stayed away during both of his terms in office. (sda/dpa)
