Several passengers were still trapped in the rubble, it said. According to the railway company, some of them were still conscious and able to communicate with rescue workers while emergency services worked with heavy equipment and cutting tools.
How did the accident happen?
According to the information, a commuter train hit a taxi at a level crossing on Monday evening. Another train then had to brake and stop. A short time later, a long-distance train on the route between the major cities of Jakarta and Surabaya crashed into the rear of the stationary train and tore open the rear carriage.
The head of the national search and rescue authority, Mohammad Syafii, spoke of a difficult rescue. “The locomotive and a wagon have practically merged into one another, which makes the rescue work extremely difficult,” he said at a press conference.
Explosive bangs and smoke
A survivor reported an explosive bang. “It sounded like a bomb,” the passenger said on local television. Thick smoke then filled the train as passengers tried to escape in panic. (sda/dpa)
