Mali’s defense minister, Sadio Camara, has died after coordinated attacks by jihadists and Tuareg rebels on military and government facilities.

A military spokesman announced Camara’s death on state television that evening. After Saturday’s attacks, images of the general’s burned-out residence were circulated on social media, but his fate remained uncertain until the official news of his death.

Camara was one of the five members of the military government and was considered number two within the junta. According to government information, a suicide bomber detonated a car loaded with explosives in front of Camara’s residence in Kati, a city northwest of the capital Bamako. Camara died in a hospital as a result of his serious injuries, it was said.
The military reported attacks by terrorists in the capital Bamako and in the interior of the country on Saturday. There was talk on social media of attacks in the cities of Gao in the east of the country, Mopti on the Niger River and in Kati.
