Swiss embassy operations in Iran will gradually resume. As of this week, a small team has been present again in Tehran, as the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday.
It is said to be a technical team with four Swiss employees under the direction of the chargé d’affaires. The team is preparing to resume operations. This depends on the development of the situation in Iran. Consular services, including issuing visas, cannot yet be offered.
According to the communiqué, the decision to gradually reopen the embassy was made after a risk analysis and in consultation with Iran and the USA, whose interests Switzerland represents within the framework of its protecting power mandate. These interests would now be fulfilled directly from within the country.
Switzerland is following developments in the region closely and is in close contact with its partners. It remains ready to offer its good offices and supports all diplomatic initiatives that contribute to de-escalation and sustainable peace.
The Swiss embassy in Tehran was closed on March 11th. The Foreign Ministry decided this in view of the war in the Near and Middle East and the increasing security risk. (sda)
