NICOSIA — Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday criticized plans to renovate one of the EU’s main buildings in Brussels.
Meloni said Brussels should set a good example when it comes to public spending, especially in the middle of tense negotiations over the bloc’s long-term budget.
“We also need to send a clear message regarding administrative expenses,” Meloni told reporters on the sidelines of an informal EU summit in Nicosia.
“We cannot propose renovating the European Council’s headquarters at a cost of €800 million. This is something Italy cannot afford, and it would send the wrong message to citizens,” she said.
The EU’s Justus Lipsius building is reportedly due for major refurbishment, a project Meloni has criticized in the past.
