During the attack, the masked perpetrators held around 25 people hostage for around two hours. According to initial findings, at least three robbers gained access to the branch. Customers and employees were herded into an adjoining room, several of them threatened with firearms. Meanwhile, the accomplices broke into the lockers in the bank.
The perpetrator probably escaped via an underground tunnel
A passerby alerted the police after noticing suspicious movements in the bank. Emergency services then cordoned off the area in the center of the city and surrounded the building. A little later, the police managed to gradually bring those trapped to safety. No one was injured, some people received medical treatment for shock.

When special forces stormed the branch, the perpetrators were already gone – they probably fled through an underground tunnel. Investigators suspect a connection to the sewage system. It was initially unclear how high the loot was. In the evening, numerous people affected gathered in front of the bank to receive information. The mood on site was tense at times. (sda/dpa)
