US Vice President JD Vance has no regrets about his campaign help for Hungarian election loser Viktor Orban. Vance said in an interview with US broadcaster Fox News on Monday (local time) that he was “sad” that Orban had lost.
At the same time he emphasized:
“We will also work well with the next Hungarian Prime Minister.”
US President Donald Trump sent his deputy Vance to Budapest shortly before the parliamentary election last Sunday to once again drum up support for the right-wing populist Orban. However, Peter Magyar’s bourgeois Tisza party won by a clear margin.
The US did not support Orban because it believed he would win, but because “it was the right thing to stand behind a person who has stood behind us for so long,” said Vance. Orban was one of the few European heads of government to stand against the bureaucracy from Brussels, which is “very bad for the USA,” Vance continued. Orban’s voice was often the only one against planned EU regulations that clashed with the interests of US companies. (hkl/sda/dpa)
