According to Iranian sources, in the negotiations between Iran and the USA mediated by Pakistan, the warring parties disagreed on two key points. «We have reached agreement on a number of issues. However, the reality is that on two key issues the positions were too far apart and ultimately no agreement could be reached,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai to state broadcaster Irib. He did not say what the topics were.
Baghai had previously written on Platform X that the talks were about the Strait of Hormuz, the nuclear issue, war reparations, the lifting of sanctions and an end to the war. Preventing Iran from ever developing a nuclear bomb and opening the Strait of Hormuz, which is important for oil trade, are central concerns of the USA.
Iran: Diplomacy never ends
Baghai did not rule out further negotiations with the USA. When asked by the reporter whether the diplomacy was over or still ongoing, he said: “It never stops. Diplomacy is always an instrument for securing and safeguarding national interests, and diplomats must fulfill their duties in all circumstances, whether in time of war or in time of peace.”
There was an atmosphere of mistrust. It was therefore never realistic to expect that an agreement could be reached in a single meeting. Nevertheless, the meeting lasted more than 20 hours, said Baghai. The topics are very complex. (sda/dpa)
