In the almost 50-day dispute over funding for the Department of Homeland Security, US President Trump wants to take employee pay into his own hands. The standstill of government business in the ministry has now lasted 48 days this Thursday.

“I will soon be signing an executive order paying ALL of the great Department of Homeland Security employees,” he said on his Truth Social platform. He had already made a similar announcement last week for airport security personnel, who also report to the ministry. Long lines at the airport had become a test of patience for many Americans during the holiday season.
Trump left it unclear what exactly the content of the order would be. According to the constitution, budgetary issues and thus the financing of authorities are a matter for Congress. The parties’ bone of contention is the controversial deportation raids by the immigration agency ICE, which reports to the Department of Homeland Security. (hkl/sda/dpa)
