As the state statistics agency Indec announced, around 28.2 percent of Argentines were considered poor in the second half of 2025 – compared to 38.1 percent a year earlier.

In the South American country, around 13 million people live below the poverty line. According to Indec, the proportion of extremely poor people has fallen to 6.3 percent. That is 1.9 percentage points less than in the second half of 2024. According to experts, the decline in poverty is due, among other things, to lower inflation.
Milei has been in power since December 2023. When he took over the government, 41.7 percent of people in Argentina were in poverty. In the first months of his administration, poverty rose significantly to more than half the population after he cut social programs and subsidies. (sda/dpa)
