At an election campaign appearance in the city of Györ, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán appeared noticeably thin-skinned. At the performance on Friday evening, opponents of the head of government apparently also mingled with the audience and booed Orbán. He reacted visibly angrily and launched into an angry tirade against the audience.

In his tirade, Orbán accused the demonstrators of representing Ukrainian interests. “You are not on Hungary’s side,” Orbán shouted at the demonstrators, who then booed him again. “You want a pro-Ukrainian government and want to bring Hungarian money to Ukraine,” Orbán continued. The Hungarian journalist Flora Garamvolgyi commented on the scene on Platform X with the words: “I have been reporting on Orbán for twelve years now and have never experienced such an angry and emotional reaction from him.”

Election in Hungary: Orbán stirs up sentiment against Ukraine
On April 12, Hungarians will elect a new parliament and Orbán’s chances of re-election are slim. His challenger Péter Magyar’s party is clearly ahead in the polls. Orbán has ruled Hungary since 2010 and is considered Russia’s closest ally in the EU. During the election campaign, Orbán has been creating massive anti-Ukraine sentiment for weeks.
Orbán accuses the government in Kiev of blocking oil deliveries from Russia through the Druzhba pipeline. The Ukrainian government blames Russian attacks on the pipeline running through Ukraine for the supply stoppage. Orbán is currently blocking an EU aid package for Ukraine worth 90 billion euros. Kiev urgently needs the money to keep the state running. Ukraine has been fighting to defend itself against the Russian war of aggression for more than four years.
