A fire broke out during the night in a large disco with around 750 people partying in Kehl, Baden-Württemberg. The building was then evacuated and the guests escaped outside, the police said. None of those affected were injured by the fire.
However, three people were treated by the emergency services because of “the overall situation”. They were uninjured, but were stressed and were therefore treated, said a police spokeswoman. They did not need to be taken to the hospital.
Celebrants from nearby Strasbourg
The flames destroyed a well-known club in Kehl, not far from the French border in the Ortenau district. Guests from nearby Strasbourg also come to party at the hip-hop and Afro music disco. In total, the club offers space for up to 1,500 guests with 400 seats. According to police, adjacent buildings are not in danger from the fire.
At least 80 firefighters, police and rescue services were deployed in the early hours of the morning, the spokeswoman said. Hours later, the fire brigade had to extinguish the fire. Only when this work has been completed could the police fire investigators enter the building.
A number of witnesses were interviewed to determine the cause of the fire, which is still unclear. No information could yet be given about the amount of damage.
Crans-Montana fire disaster
The fire brings back memories of the New Year’s Eve inferno in Crans-Montana, which still concerns the public and the authorities in Switzerland. At the turn of the year, a devastating fire broke out in a bar there, killing 41 people and injuring dozens. Sparking party fountains had set foam on the ceiling on fire. (hkl/sda/dpa)
