Mongolian Prime Minister Gombojavϊh Dzandanshatar has resigned after internal party power struggles and pressure from parliament. As the Mongolian news agency Montsame reported, 74 percent of deputies in parliament, the Grand State Khural, voted for the motion.
The resignation could further politically destabilize the country, which is rich in raw materials and dependent on mining. Investors could become increasingly concerned about Mongolia, which is surrounded by China and Russia and is also constantly struggling with corruption scandals.
Sessions in Parliament were boycotted
Already in the fall, a power struggle within the ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MVP) led to a government crisis and almost led to Dzandanshatar’s removal after just four months in office. However, the Constitutional Court overturned a vote at the time.
Most recently, the opposition Democratic Party boycotted parliamentary sessions and thereby blocked parliamentary work in the committees. Dzandanshatar will remain in office on an interim basis until a new head of government is appointed. The current parliament speaker Nyam-Osorϊh Uchral is considered a possible successor. (sda/dpa)
