Another skier has died after the avalanche accident in South Tyrol at the weekend. The 44-year-old man from Austria died of his injuries in the hospital in Bolzano, the clinic announced.
The 2,669 meter high Hohe Ferse near Ratschings.
A total of four people were killed: two other men aged 56 and 62 and a 26-year-old woman, all from Italy. Three Germans were injured, some seriously. However, their lives are not in danger.
Two dozen skiers
According to the mountain rescue service, the avalanche, which was approximately 150 meters wide and 800 meters long, hit a total of two dozen skiers who were ski touring in high alpine terrain on Saturday. The snow slab came loose near the 2,669 meter high Hohe Ferse near Ratschings.
In total, at least 130 people have died in avalanches in Europe this winter season. The highest number of avalanche deaths was recorded in Italy, now at 36, followed by France (31) and Austria (29). This emerges from current figures from the European Avalanche Warning Service (EAWS), an association of avalanche warning services.
