This is what a new climate protection program that the cabinet in Berlin approved. Environment Minister Carsten Schneider and his colleagues had been negotiating the details for a long time.
Germany has set itself the goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. By 2045, Germany wants to be climate-neutral, meaning it will not emit more greenhouse gases than can be stored. According to calculations by the Federal Environment Agency, there is a risk that the 2030 target will not be met.
In addition to more wind turbines on land, the new program also provides funding for mixed forests that are better adapted to climate change and lists the new funding for electric cars that has already been approved. Critics complain that the government of Christian and Social Democrats under Chancellor Friedrich Merz is too optimistic in its program. (sda/dpa)
