After the election disasters in Baden-Württemberg two weeks ago and Rhineland-Palatinate on Sunday, the German FDP party leader wants to resign. The AFP news agency and the “Politico” portal reported this on Monday.
The German Liberals only received 2.1 percent of the vote in the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate. In Baden-Württemberg they had reached 4.4 percent on March 8th. As a result, they missed entry into the state parliament in both federal states. The FDP also failed to pass the 5 percent hurdle in the 2025 federal election.
Several liberal politicians had called for the resignation of the party leadership on Sunday. “After months without a recognizable strategy, many people lack confidence that something will change for the better,” said MEP Marie-Agnes Strack Zimmermann to the “Tagesspiegel”.

According to information from the magazine “Spiegel”, Strack-Zimmermann is ready to run as part of a dual leadership team. The election for the new party leadership is scheduled to take place in May.
Christian Dürr has been chairman of the German FDP since May 2025. He took over the role from Christian Lindner. (hkl)
